General Configuration consists of 14 distinct actions that can be accessed at BCP --> Configuration --> General Configuration
Already visited during the basic configuration stage this option allows you to set important information required to the smooth operation of your site. It allows you to set features that control how the hosting and sub system react together and overcome common issues such as Magic Quotes and common errors that effect the behaviour of your web servers handling of 404 errors.
In most cases the default values will be fine but some hosting issues can be solved by making adjustments in this section. If you have the ErrorDocument statement correctly entered in your .htaccess but it fails to work correctly try toggling the value for the 404 Filter. For example if it is set to No then switch it to Yes. The same action for Reverse Magic Quotes.
If pages are not downloading correctly make sure you have Gzip Compression switched off, or reduce the level of compression.
You can set the administrator username and password on this screen. When you do make sure that your website name field is correct too, the combination of these three fields are used in the security process to harden certain areas and keep them safe from many types of attack.
Competition settings default values can be edited in the General Configuration. Provide text that describes the current status of a competitions such as "The competition has begun! Now is your opportunity to become this weeks top surfer!".
If you have a phpBB forum you can create an account but setting the details in the phpBB Forum Integration section.

BCP --> Configuration --> Email Configuration
This screen is used to configure email related settings. You can provide a signature with HTML and set the sending and admin email addresses. You will find a description for each on the input form as well as a description for an alternative email address useful for auto-responders.
Notifications for referrals and admin email can be enabled or disabled. If set to Yes members will receive notifications, if set to No they will not.

Leaving the Email Sending Method to PHP Mail() Function will use the PHP mail sending feature which relies on the servers sendmail service. Most of the time this solution is all you need. However some hosts disable this feature and even more often some restrict the service to just a few thousand messages a day. If this happens you will need to select SMTP and then set the following settings to an SMTP server that allows you unlimited mail (very often this can be done using the SMTP mail server offered by your ISP).

Once SMTP has been set click Save Settings and check by requesting a password reminder from the member login screen. If you receive the message you know the settings are correct.
* Note * Some mail service providers will give you an alternative port number such as 46 (can be any number up to 65535), use this number instead of 46.
BCP --> Configuration --> Promotional Configuration
Controls promotional information on your site such as the placement of banners and meta tags used by robots and search engines to discover information about your site. All fields accept HTML apart from the meta tag fields. Meta keywords should be a comma separated list of keywords (10 to 12 are suggested) and the meta tag description should be a brief description of your site.
BCP --> Configuration --> Financial Configuration
This screen is visited during the basic configuration for providing your Paypal and Alertpay information as well as setting the currency the website will be based upon. You can also add your e-gold id if you have one. If you leave an ID or details out that payment processor will not be used. Note that INTGold has ceased trading so if your financial configuration screen includes it please ignore it!

Pro ConfigurationBCP --> Configuration --> Pro Configuration
Pro memberships are an important part of your traffic exchange and is where you will create a residual income so they form an important part of the setup. You can change many aspects of pro membership and create an unlimited number of levels (well, there are practical limits such as disk space, but outside the obvious they are unlimited!).
To start pro membership configuration go BCP --> Configuration --> Pro Configuration. The first choice is whether to show Pro membership options on signup. If you select Yes people joining your exchange will see the Pro membership prices and have the option to start with Pro membership options right away.
A Pro only membership exchange can be difficult to start from scratch and the catch 22 is it is difficult to convert free members or pro members at a later stage as to do so means eliminating free surfers - the very surfers that maybe delivering the traffic to your exchange!
Some have found the solution is to build a free manual exchange membership thus building a relationship and reputation with your members. You can then use that community to promote a new Pro only exhcange.
However, Pro membership is available in most possibly all traffic exchanges and setting the Pro membership options for your exchange is straight forward. Move to the Pro Membership Setup section and you will see some entries have already been prepared for you.

The number of credits is calculated by using this number to multiply the number of credits give to free members. For example if you give free members 100 web hits, 100 banner hits and 100 text ads and this value is set to 10, then this pro member will receive 1000 web hits, 1000 banner hits and 1000 text ad hits - only on signup. ie if they signup to a pro account when they join. |
| Pro Download Multiplier | Set the number used to multiply the credits earned for downloading over the ordinary credits given to the free member For example: If free members earn 10 credits for downloading and the multiplier is set to 5 this pro member earns 50 |
BCP --> Configuration --> Multilevel Configuration
Part of the viral attraction to a traffic exchange is the ability to earn credits from your downline. As you introduce people to the website you are rewarded by earning a part of their surfing and also a commission on their purchases can be offered too.

By default Multilevel rewards are enabled for credits but disabled for financial commission. If you enable commissions you can choose whether these are offered on All Purchases are certain areas of the script. Once that's done you can prepare a matrix of who get's what. For example you can set it up so only Pro members receive financial commissions or all accouhnts including free but provide higher rewards for each level of membership.

BCP --> Configuration --> Account Configuration
Use this screen to setup the ordinary or free account. Most of the features in this screen are selecf explanatory but look out for these and consider their use carefully:-
First Login and Next Login enter a url to a page for each situation. When a member first signs up they will be redirected to this page on their first login, this is a good time to offer information and products on a "once only offer" basis. They will never see the page again so perhaps you could offer them a large quantity of hits for just 50% the normal price. The Next Login allows you to make a similar kind of offer but should be more general in nature. You can still do "Today only" type offers but remember to rotate them! (maybe ask a programmer friend to write and easy way for you to do this).
Extra Account Information: some people want more information about thier members. It's a strange Internet fact that for every additional field you require answered the less members you will accumulate, but when your membership count is not the most important thing you can use these fields to retrieve more information during the signup process.
Referral settings allow you to set how the referring system operates in your website.
BCP --> Configuration --> Approve Configuration
This feature allows you to hand over the burden of approving websites to your members and reward them by doing so. You control the process by deciding how many votes a page needs before it enters rotation and how many credits can be earned by for each vote.

Once enabled the Approval System will take care of all approvals for you.
BCP --> Configuration --> Cash Configuration
The cash system is disabled by default. Enabling it allows your members to earn cash for a number of situations such as referrals and surfing. Cash income can be limited to Pro members thus limiting the liability your exchange can generate. As a rule of thumb offerring cash incentives will generate traffic and members fast but there are drawbacks too. Be careful when enabling cash, pay particular attention to your growing liability and ensure that no obvious cheating is going on. Take a close look at countries where a couple of bucks represents a normal monthly salary. Sometimes it may be necessary to ban IP's and common email addresses (yahoo.cn is a major no no if you want to avoid abuse).
BCP --> Configuration --> Convert Configuration
If you allow your members to convert credits between banner and text ad impressions and website hits use this feature to setup the conversion rate. Be careful not to get the ratios wrong or you may end up providing an easy way to earn credits without surfing!
Category ConfigurationBCP --> Configuration --> Category Configuration
Categories enable people to choose which sites they see as well as creating a useful directories of sites to browse. By default this is not enabled.
BCP --> Configuration --> Trade Configuration
Trade Configuration is enabled by default and allows your members to trade credits.
BCP --> Configuration --> ISB Settings
Information Side Bar Settings are used to modify the content shown on the columns on the left hand side of the standard template.
BCP --> Configuration --> Support Canned Replies
If you keep being asked the same questions in the support system Support Canned Replies can save a you time. With an extensive set of Database and Converted Merge tags it's easy to create personalised messages that really give the impression of personal service.
