SYMPTOMS

Any changes I make in the BCP configuration settings are not saved.

CAUSE

The /data folder and it's contents do not have the correct settings

SOLUTION

Unix/Linux: chmod the folder and it's contents to 777

Windows: set folder and file permissions to read/write modify

Is there any other way round this..?

I'm hosted on a Windows server, but the host will not allow read/write modify to be enabled. And changing host is not an option.

Am I now stuck with something I cannot use.?

You could edit the config.inc.php file manually (you will find it in the /data folder) but it's not a small job, there are many hundreds of entries to be made/altered and you should do this from the BCP if you can.

As all active websites need read/write access it's unusual that a hosting company would not allow it, it's a bit like a car hire company providing a car without the wheels, it's fundemental really.

If you have installed front page extensions this will lockdown all file permissions on a Windows server. All your hosting provider needs to do is reset the permissions on the /data folder to their original before the extensions were installed and you will probably be able to edit it again. Most (and I thought all) hosting companies are happy to do this free of charge.
