Ventrino Forum for Walker Scripts _ Third Party Products & Services _ Timer Fix Available

Posted by: Joshua Ditty Jul 18 2011, 07:51 AM

Hello Everyone,

I got a commission from Jason Wise at GradeATraffic to fix a timer so that it would continue counting down in Firefox and Chrome when the user switched to a different tab, and had heard that many ventrino owners were looking for a fix for this.

If you are one of them, I can install the fix for $15. You can contact me for this or any other work on Ventrino sites through my website at http://www.fopo.net/

Hello Chad,

Would like to look into that - how is it freezing up? Is the timer simply stopping?

If you could let me know what browser and version you are using I will be sure to look into that.

Hello,

The entire surfbar just stopped working...all links and images dead...

FF Version 5.0

Did the same in Chrome as well....but I can open another surfbar and it will start working again..but the new one I just opened froze...not the timer..the whole surfbar.

If I open just 2 tabs..all is ok..open 3 or more is when it happens..

Best Wishes

Hi Josh,

A big THANK YOU for putting in the fix on SciFi Hits! LOVE IT! No problems whatsoever! All my surfers appreciate it too, surf rates have risen tremendously.

Warm Regards,
Judy

Thank you Judy. smile.gif

Chad, I am looking into this issue, but seems the likely cause would be either a resource issue on the client or a loading issue from the server to the client.

I currently have the fix installed on 5 sites, and have surfed them together for a while and not been able to reproduce the problem clearly. After I closed them all I went back to scifi for a moment and the surfbar did freeze while loading for a moment, but I stopped and refreshed it and all was fine. I am trying to reproduce that again but not sure if it was the problem you are having or just a momentary fluke. This freeze was because the page hadn't finished loading so the javascript had not started to run yet. Do you know if that is the problem you are having?

For a resource issue, javascripts are run by the browser that loads them, so if you have many javascripts running at once it could slow a computer to the point where it would freeze. This seems unlikely for you but it is a possibility.

I had read in this other thread here there are some complaints about javascript lag in ventrino sites, so I will look and see if there may be some way to optimize those scripts:
http://www.ventrino.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=14517&st=0

It would be a bit iffy for sites not running on a dev version of ventrino though as there is a large block of code that is inside the surfbar file itself. This is where the original timer code dwells.

The best thing there would be for a future ventrino update to remove the javascript from the surfbar files and put them into a javascript file that is called by the surfbar. This would allow owners the ability to modify the javascript more freely in the future, but for now I'll see what can be done there.

Josh, does this fix work with the image surfbar mod that Drake has installed on various sites? From what I can understand, his files are encrypted. Which file would you have to edit to fix the timer issue? I will be getting the fix if you can do it on the image bar that Drake installed.

The timer fix works great!
I think for the small price everybody should put it on their "must have" list. Maybe before anything else they want to enhance their Ventrino site with.

Thanks Joshua!
