High CPU on abelia

A table in the eximstats mysql database has crashed.  This table is used to store email statistics.  Because of the high volume of email being sent there is no quick fix.  It is being dealt with and an announcement will be made here as soon as it's complete.

If you are on abelia it would help if you could postpone any email send for a couple of hours.

Thank you,
Kind Regards,
Martyn

(RESOLVED) abliea.ventrino.com offline investigation

No one appears to know what happened and I cannot see anything of any concern in the logs.  It is likely there was a routing error at the datacenter that possibly caused a break between the server and the net.  Until I hear otherwise this is the one I'm going to run with!

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Kind Regards,
Martyn

abliea.ventrino.com offline investigation - update

The server is coming back online now.  At this stage I don't know the cause, it maybe related to the cpanel update this morning (details below).

Kind Regards,
Martyn

cPanel 11.23 STABLE is being released tonight 12:00AM CST to bring all of the cPanel / WHM branches to the 11.23 series.

This latest STABLE release incorporates a number of recently announced features including RoundCube webmail, SPF, Domain Keys, improved transfers, improved installs, SSL expiration warnings, and proxy subdomains which allow for users to access cPanel, webmail and WHM over port 80. STABLE also gets the much anticipated VPS Optimized and tailwatch features which reduce memory usage on all servers but especially on VPS systems. Other new features are also added such as mail filtering where users can now take advantage of a graphical folder selector for easy filter creation.

More information about the specific changes to the latest STABLE can be found at http://changelog.cpanel.net/. Notable 11.23 features are described in the following blog post: http://blog.cpanel.net/?p=51

abliea.ventrino.com offline investigation

The monitoring service has sent me a notification that the above server is currently offline.  I am ivestigating this issue right now and will return as soon as I have news.

(RESOLVED) Backups and abelia performance

Backups

I have started a complete backup of the server.  This is to consolidate changes made after the downtime last week.  This is an intense FULL backup and during this time you may detect some performance stutter. I have set the running priority low which means less impact on your site but the backups will last longer.

Abelia performance

Since the new network card was installed we have not had a single interruption to performance.  In fact the new card is capabale of roughly 10 times the throughput so it is likely you have experienced better performance than ever before!

Which server?

Some people have asked how they can tell which server they are on. To find out login to your cpanel and about halfway down the left hand side you will see it provides the server name just belowyour hosting package.

Why is my server not in the server monitoring list?

I will set them up in the next week.  I have been writing code to automate actions based upon the results, from code that sends sms when a server is down, disk space is low etc to emailing members whose bandwidth is running low.  The delay is that I have just not gotton round to completing it!

Kind Regards,
Martyn

URGENT Maintenance on abelia.ventrino.com

An engineer has identified a problem and is replacing the network card right now.  I took the liberty of asking them to do it without warning as they told me it could be the cause of the problem over the last few days - and this is a quieter period (5.27am server time).

So humblest apologies for not telling you sooner and giving some warning.  I do think this maybe a worthwhile excercise though, the new card will also give us a 1GB connection as opposed to 100Mb so you may even see better performance too.

Estimate is between 20 and 30 minutes downtime.

Kind Regards,
Martyn

New server heldervue.ventrino.com coming online in June

While problems with abelia have been exhausting for all of us we continue to expand the number of shared hosting servers we operate every quarter.  Early next month heldervue.ventrino.com comes online with faster processors and memory.  Any Exchange plan owner that would like to move (can be done transparently in most cases) please let me know.  This will provide some relief to abelia and thus give us all some peace!

Thank you.

Martyn

On going issues with abelia.ventrino.com - what's happening and why?

I have just finished a phone conversations with Justin Chase, a Linux support team leader for the Houston Datacenter. He is going to look into the logs to see if he can find the cause for the past 3 days of interruptions to service.

He did offer an initial evaluation. The first place to look whenever this kind of issue arises is how much activity is there on the server and is it increasing, perhaps even compounding. An issue of a poor performing server could be down to the success of one site or more. I know this is stating the obvious but it did cause me to look through the connections and I have to ask how come we are seeing so many from the same IP's, some of them owners.

Every 10 minutes I take a sample of this and place it in a table, you can see them for yourself here:-

http://ventrino1.com/geo/countries.php

For performance reasons we do not use keepalive, this means if you go to a page with 20 items on it you will open 20 connections. However it is extremely unlikely you will have 20 concurrent connections therefore, a normal page download would account for 3 or 4 concurrent connections, which means someone with 20 to 25 connections in this list is currently downloading 7 pages from the server. Somone with 120 about 30 pages. But even these figures are conservative.

Edit to the above statement.  Thom and Richard have done some testing and it appears they are seeing higher connection counts than is suggested in the above statement.  While I wrote the interface bit (the ropey web page you look at) the script that counts the connects at the network level is a commercial product.  I have asked them to check my interpretation (and my code) to make sure I have understood their API correctly.  For now it appears that a single browser will open around 20 to 25 connections when surfing.

At least until I have a full report on the cause of the issues if your IP is on that list with a high connection count please reduce the number of sites you are surfing concurrently. I will write code later today to enforce an upper limit. Those of you who have not done anything about abuse and those with high bandwidth bills may like to check out the "How to avoid abuse" topic in the owners manual.

Kind Regards,
Martyn

01:14AM Server abelia.ventrino.com is down

It has happened again, during a quiet period too.  Engineers are looking at it right now.  I'll get back to you when I have more information.

Kind Regards,
Martyn

Update: 11:45am Scanning for trojans

CPU will be high for a while while the server is scanned for trojans.  This is part of the investigation into the licensing error earlier today.  It should last for another 30 minutes (ish).

Kind Regards,
Martyn
